FD-258 vs. SF-87: Which Fingerprint Card Do You Need?
Most people arrive at their fingerprinting appointment knowing they need to be fingerprinted — but not always knowing which card they need. Here's a clear breakdown of the two most common ink fingerprint cards so you can come prepared.
What Is the FD-258?
The FD-258 is the standard FBI fingerprint card and the most widely used card in the United States. It is required for:
- Employment background checks (healthcare, education, finance, and more)
- Professional licensing (real estate, insurance, law, nursing, etc.)
- Volunteer and childcare clearances
- Immigration and naturalization applications
- Firearm purchases requiring a federal background check
If your employer, licensing board, or agency simply says "get fingerprinted," the FD-258 is almost always what they mean.
What Is the SF-87?
The SF-87 (Standard Form 87) is a U.S. government fingerprint card used specifically within federal hiring and security processes. It is required for:
- Federal government employment
- Security clearance applications (Secret, Top Secret, etc.)
- Contractor positions requiring federal background investigations
- Positions with agencies such as the Department of Defense, DHS, or FBI
The SF-87 is typically provided directly by the hiring agency or HR department. If you've been given this form, bring it to your appointment.
Which One Do You Need?
A simple rule of thumb:
- Private sector job, license, or volunteer role? → FD-258
- Federal government job or security clearance? → SF-87
- Not sure? → Contact your employer or licensing agency and ask which card type they require. You can also reach out to us and we'll help point you in the right direction.
