An FBI Identity History Summary is a federal document.

When certain foreign authorities require proof that the document is authentic, an apostille may be required before they will accept it.

Because the document is issued at the federal level, the apostille is handled through the U.S. Department of State Office of Authentications — not a New York County Clerk or New York Secretary of State.

Using Your FBI Apostille Outside the United States

Your destination country matters.

Hague Apostille Countries

If the destination country accepts Hague Apostilles, the federal apostille may be the final U.S. authentication step.

Non-Hague Countries

Some countries do not use the Hague Apostille process.

Your FBI document may instead require a federal authentication certificate followed by additional processing through the appropriate foreign embassy or consulate.

For security reasons, FBI or service-provider access links may have expiration or access restrictions.

We strongly recommend downloading your results from a computer rather than relying only on a mobile device and securely saving the original PDF.

Do not send screenshots of your FBI results.

Do not edit or recreate the document.

Generally, an eligible FBI Identity History Summary does not need to be separately notarized before being submitted for a federal apostille.

No. An FBI Identity History Summary is a federal document, so federal authentication/apostille processing is handled through the U.S. Department of State.

Countries outside that system may require additional authentication and embassy or consulate legalization.

State-issued background checks follow a different authentication process.
