What Is an FBI Apostille?
An FBI Identity History Summary is a federal document.
When certain foreign authorities require proof that the document is authentic, an apostille may be required before they will accept it.
Because the document is issued at the federal level, the apostille is handled through the U.S. Department of State Office of Authentications — not a New York County Clerk or New York Secretary of State.
We help coordinate this federal process for you.
Already Have Your FBI Background Check?
Perfect.
You may not need to purchase another background check if the document you already have meets the requirements for apostille processing and is acceptable to the authority requesting it.
Upload your FBI document for review when completing your request.

Don't Have Your FBI Background Check Yet?
We can start from the beginning.
Schedule your fingerprint appointment and select the FBI background check option that works best for you.
Once your FBI results are issued, we can continue directly into the federal apostille process.

Using Your FBI Apostille Outside the United States
Your destination country matters.
Hague Apostille Countries
If the destination country accepts Hague Apostilles, the federal apostille may be the final U.S. authentication step.
Non-Hague Countries
Some countries do not use the Hague Apostille process.
Your FBI document may instead require a federal authentication certificate followed by additional processing through the appropriate foreign embassy or consulate.
EasyWay also offers Embassy & Consulate Legalization Document Review services when additional legalization may be required.

Important Information About Your Electronic FBI Results
If your FBI Identity History Summary is delivered electronically:
Download and save the original PDF immediately.
For security reasons, FBI or service-provider access links may have expiration or access restrictions.
We strongly recommend downloading your results from a computer rather than relying only on a mobile device and securely saving the original PDF.
Do not send screenshots of your FBI results.
Do not edit or recreate the document.
We need the appropriate electronic document for review and processing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my FBI background check need to be notarized?
Generally, an eligible FBI Identity History Summary does not need to be separately notarized before being submitted for a federal apostille.
We will review the document before proceeding.
Can New York State apostille my FBI background check?
No. An FBI Identity History Summary is a federal document, so federal authentication/apostille processing is handled through the U.S. Department of State.
Can you get my FBI background check too?
Yes. We offer fingerprinting and FBI background check services in addition to the apostille service.
I already received my FBI background check. Can you just do the apostille?
Yes. Select FBI Apostille Only and provide your document for review.
How long does the apostille take?
U.S. Department of State processing times can change.
You will receive the current estimated processing information available when your service begins, but government processing dates cannot be guaranteed.
Can I use the apostille in any country?
An apostille is generally used for countries participating in the Hague Apostille Convention.
Countries outside that system may require additional authentication and embassy or consulate legalization.
Always confirm the requirements of the country and organization receiving your document.
Can you apostille a state background check?
State-issued background checks follow a different authentication process.
Contact us for a Document Review so we can determine which service applies to your document.
Do you offer services for clients outside of New York?
Contact us for document review and service availability. Many portions of federal apostille processing can be coordinated without the client personally traveling to Washington, D.C.
